Our Commitment to More Responsible Emails
At Ecomail, we’re proud to commit to digital sobriety by integrating expiration dates into our emails, in perfect alignment with the initiative led by ZeroCarbon.email.
Why Add Expiration Dates to Emails?
A Stark Reality
Did you know that every day, more than 33 billion emails (marketing and non-marketing) are sent across the world? Most of these emails become obsolete just a few days after they’re received, yet they continue to take up storage space in data centers for years.
This buildup equals the equivalent of 481,000 hard drives every year that need to be manufactured, powered, and recycled!
A Shared Responsibility
Until now, the responsibility of deleting these outdated emails entirely rested on the recipients. But let’s be honest: who really takes the time to clean up their inbox?
At Ecomail, we think it’s time to flip this logic around and hold email senders accountable.
How does it work?
When you write a new email, you have the option to set an expiration date just below the subject field. Once your email is sent, this information will be communicated to the recipient’s server. If the server supports this feature, it can automatically manage the deletion of your message once it expires, making their organization easier.

How can I tell if an email I receive has an expiration date?
We’ve added a new button to your mailbox. It allows you to display, in the current folder you’re viewing, only the emails with expiration dates.

This helps you know which emails can be deleted quickly without much thought.
When you open an email with an expiration date, a message informs you and gives you the expiration date.

Is it possible to automatically delete expired emails?
Not yet, but it's on our roadmap!
